Gluten Intolerance 

A gluten allergy is the body’s inability to digest or break down the gluten protein found in wheat and certain other grains. Gluten intolerance (also known as a gluten sensitivity) can range from a mild sensitivity to gluten to full-blown celiac disease. Around 1 in 150 people in the UK has celiac disease. Celiac Disease is a severe autoimmune disorder in which a person’s immune system attacks gluten in the small intestine.  Gluten Intolerance can affect people in many different ways, including the following symptoms:

Bloating Hormone Imbalance
Flatulence Pre Menstrual Syndrome
Diarrhoea Unexplained Infertility
Constipation Fatigue
Abdominal Cramps Chronic Fatigue
Anxiety Fibromyalgia
Depression Inflammation of joints
Attention Deficit Disorder Tingling in hands and feet

Of course, many of these symptoms can be attributed to a number of other health factors.  Ruling out Gluten Intolerance is just as important as discovering it.

Reading Food Labels

When shopping, get into the habit of reading food labels to ensure that you are avoiding anything containing gluten.  Gluten isn’t contained in one single grain but found in many, as per the below:

In addition to pure wheat, all of its forms are also off-limits. This includes:

  • wheat starch
  • wheat bran
  • wheat germ
  • couscous
  • cracked wheat
  • durum
  • semolina
  • spelt
  • barley
  • bulgur
  • rye

Gluten Free Grains

  • Buckwheat
  • Corn
  • Millet
  • Oats **see below
  • Quinoa
  • Rice
  • Wild Rice

** oats (oats themselves don’t contain gluten, but are often processed in plants that produce gluten-containing grains and may be contaminated).
